The Story
Based on the generational folklore, set in the 16th century AD, the show brings to life the tale of the doomed love affair between the Mughal crown prince Salim and the beautiful, ill-fated servant girl Anarkali, whose fervour and intensity perpetrates a war between the prince and his father – the great Mughal emperor Akbar. Anarkali finally surrenders herself to be entombed alive for the life of her love, Prince Salim.
The Characters
AnarkaliAnarkali was a woman of humble birth, who served the chief courtesan Rukhsana. Despite her status, the prince was drawn to her beauty, talent and strong spirit. Her love for the prince was such that she gave up her life in exchange for his.
SalimAs a child, Salim, the crown prince, was a spoilt brat filled with disrespect and self-indulgence. Fourteen years in exile and military training saw him become a valiant warrior, yet he remained a romantic at heart. His love for Anarkali led him into battle against the most powerful emperor – his father, Akbar.
BahaarGroomed from childhood to ensnare the prince’s heart, she was the daughter of the chief courtesan of the Mughal empire. She grew up with one goal in mind, to become the empress of India. When her dream of marrying Salim was unknowingly snatched by the servant girl Anarkali, she vowed to destroy her and their love.
